The RWA Offers Assistance To Federal Employees Impacted By Government Shutdown

Jan 23, 2019

The Regional Water Authority (RWA) has announced that it will waive late fees and interest on overdue balances for federal employees who are working without pay or have been furloughed without pay during the partial government shutdown. This relief is available through the duration of the government shutdown. Additionally, RWA employees have begun collecting monetary contributions and non-perishable food items for donation to New Haven’s Community Soup Kitchen and the Connecticut Food Bank in support of those affected by the government shutdown.

“Access to high-quality water is essential for life, and we do not want furloughed workers impacted by the government shutdown to worry their water service is at stake during this uncertain time,” said Larry Bingaman, RWA’s President & CEO. “We stand ready to work with all customers who have hardships that affect their ability to pay their water bill, and this includes anyone affected by the shutdown.”

Any federal employee working without pay or furloughed without pay is encouraged to contact the RWA by calling customer service at 203-562-4020 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applicants must produce proof of residency and proof of notice by the federal government that they are not being paid.

The RWA also reminds customers that they have a Residential Water Assistance program to assist customers living at or below 175% of the Federal Poverty Income Level. Qualifying applicants can receive up to $100 toward their water bills. Anyone interested in applying for the Residential Water Assistance Program should contact Dollar Energy, RWA’s partner on this initiative, at 1-800-375-1388. Callers will be connected with Dollar Energy’s Program Coordinator or their Hardship Program Coordinator who will provide free, confidential assistance.
